Taking a photograph of Toronto’s iconic Gooderham or Flatiron Building was more than just a task—it was a challenge. With its unique triangular shape, this historic architectural gem stands proudly at the intersection of Wellington Street and Front Street, but capturing its essence isn't easy. Traffic, utility poles, and the constant buzz of people were like obstacles between me and the shot I envisioned.
I wanted more than just a simple photo of the Flatiron Building; I aimed to capture its spirit while also weaving the Toronto skyline into the frame. Finding the right angle that included both the Flatiron Building and the CN Tower, Royal Bank Tower, TD Bank Tower, and Bank of Nova Scotia was a bit like solving a puzzle. After scouting the area, I finally found the perfect spot where everything aligned.
As the sun began to set, it painted the sky with soft hues, casting a warm glow on the building's red-brick façade. The blend of Victorian Romanesque architecture and the modern cityscape created a contrast that was exactly what I’d hoped for. I took a deep breath and clicked the shutter. In that moment, everything came together perfectly, the historic architecture in the foreground, and Toronto’s modern skyline standing tall behind it.
The Gooderham Building, constructed in 1892, is a true icon of Toronto’s architectural heritage. Its Romanesque design with a steep-pitched roof and arched windows speaks to an era gone by. It’s a landmark that not only represents Toronto’s past but also its ability to blend history with the present.
When I reviewed the photo later, I was thrilled. The image had turned out better than I ever imagined. It captured the essence of this beloved building and its place in the heart of Toronto's skyline.
