The adventure began atop Monserrate in Bogotá, Colombia. While exploring the forest surrounding the church, I learned it was home to exotic birds, including the legendary Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera). This species, with its remarkable bill longer than its body, thrives by feeding on the trumpet flower’s nectar—a flower that elegantly hangs upside down in vivid orange splendor.
Excited by the challenge, I searched for the perfect flower, my camera and 600mm telephoto lens at the ready. Hours of patient movement and stillness passed. Then, in a flash of green and orange, I caught sight of my first-ever Sword-billed Hummingbird hovering near a trumpet flower. It was mesmerizing—the bird danced gracefully, dipping its extraordinary bill into the flower for nectar.
I took hundreds of photos, adjusting my high-speed settings to 1/4000 of a second to freeze its rapid wingbeats. My new camera helped focus amidst the vibrant chaos of colors: the emerald feathers of the bird, the rich orange of the flower, and the deep green of the leaves.
After reviewing my shots, I was thrilled to find I’d captured the perfect image. Inspired by the natural beauty of the moment, I transformed the original into a Hi-Key painterly art piece, emulating a palette knife and oil painting style. This process added an artistic dimension to the photograph, bringing its vibrancy and energy to life.
The experience of photographing such a rare and beautiful bird was unforgettable. Nature’s artistry, paired with the creativity of photography, turned a fleeting moment into a masterpiece.
