At the summit of Monserrate in Bogotá, Colombia, I was greeted with breathtaking views and the promise of discovering exotic wildlife. As I explored the lush forest surrounding the historic church, whispers of the elusive Sword-billed Hummingbird piqued my curiosity. Known as Ensifera ensifera, this bird boasts the longest bill relative to its body of any species—a perfect adaptation for feeding on trumpet-shaped flowers like the vibrant orange blooms hanging gracefully above me.
Determined to capture this marvel, I sought out the trumpet flowers and patiently waited. Minutes turned to hours as I adjusted my position, scanning for the flutter of tiny wings. Suddenly, a flash of movement caught my eye—a Sword-billed Hummingbird hovered near the flower! Its long bill dipped gracefully into the bloom as it fed, performing a delicate dance in the air.
Excitement surged as I raised my camera, equipped with a 600mm telephoto lens. Using a high-speed shutter at 1/4000 of a second, I clicked away, aiming to freeze the bird’s rapid wingbeats. The intricate greens of the forest, the fiery orange of the flower, and the iridescent colors of the bird came together in a vivid display of nature's artistry.
After reviewing hundreds of shots, I found the perfect composition. Back home, I edited the photo into an image I am so proud of. It’s more than just a photo; it’s a tribute to the elegance and wonder of the Sword-billed Hummingbird in its natural habitat.
