The Vatican, the spiritual heart of the Roman Catholic faith, holds an immense power that resonates deeply with Christians worldwide. When I was in Rome, I knew I had to capture a photograph from the top of St. Peter's Basilica dome, looking down on the spectacular St. Peter's Square and the road leading to it. My goal was also to include the city of Rome, the Tiber River, and its bridges in the backdrop.
Reaching the top of the dome was an experience in itself. The journey up the many stairs was challenging, and as I ascended, the spiral staircases became narrower and more slanted, following the dome's curvature. I fought the feeling of claustrophobia to ensure I could reach my goal.
When I finally emerged from the tiny staircases, I was greeted by a breathtaking view of Rome and the Vatican beneath me in all their splendor. The timing was perfect; the morning sun was already glowing warm gold in the sky. I carefully searched for the perfect spot to capture a symmetrically aligned image of all the buildings, roads, and the sun. It felt like a miracle when I found it.
The resulting shot captures everything I had hoped for and more. My heart and soul skipped a beat when I realized I might have captured the ideal image. Having this print on my wall is a constant reminder of that special, sacred trip to the Vatican and Rome. It serves as an inspiration and a testament to the beauty and spiritual power of this holy place.
