Let me start by asking “who wouldn’t want a picture of the Flying Golden Chez Black Mermaid hanging above their sofa or bed?” It’s a great question. If you have ever been to Positano Italy, you will not only remember the mermaid and the famous Chez Black restaurant, but you will also want to have the Mermaid hanging somewhere in your home or office in order to remember that special place.
As we were planning our trip to Positano on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, my wife and I ran into an old friend who was great traveler and lover of all that is Italian – food, clothes, the people and the country. When we told him that we would staying in Positano, the first thing he said was – “you must eat at Chez Black, it is incredible”, he told us he dines there every single time he goes to Positano. After discussing it, we ensured it was on the list of eateries that we would visit.
So, after waking up (late) on the very first morning after our arrival, we excitingly got ready to walk and have lunch at Chez Black’s. We left our rental apartment and made our way down the 167 steps that lead down to the main street near the beach (yes, you had to walk up the 167 steps also). We walked only about 100 steps and there, lo and behold, was the famous Chez Black seafood restaurant. All decked out in its nautical theme of beautiful blue, white and warm colored woods, and with its totally open air alfresco dining, we quickly found a seat, sat down and began just staring out into the ocean. We sat in wonder as to how close everything was in Positano – “we are going to love this place” we said, and we did.
While soaking in the people, the wait staff and feeling totally immersed in the Amalfi way of life, we then saw their famous “Golden Flying Mermaid” hanging proudly carrying the blue sign that read “Ristorante Chez Black”. We were hooked. The service was superb, the food was spectacular and the bottle of wine was divine. An experience that we will never forget and as such why this photograph is so important to us. When you go to visit Positano, please eat at Chez Black, and just as our friend told us “you’ll never forget it”.
