This image captures Patagonia Horses which are waiting to take their riders on a “ride of a lifetime” along the hillsides and plains just outside of El Calafate located in the southern tip of Argentina. This Painterly photo art version of my photograph, looks to capture the mystery, wonder and romance of Patagonia which I believe needs to be experienced by everyone. When I first heard of Patagonia, I vowed to visit and explore this remote location. I finally got my chance. Getting there is not easy as there are only a few number of ways to arrive (we flew directly into El Calafate). It is definitely a destination location i.e. you must be planning to go there, it’s not a drive by place. El Calafate is mainly known as the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, home to the massive Perito Moreno Glacier, whose ever-shifting icy landscape is popular for hiking and sightseeing. This glacier would be the main focus of our adventure there.
I dreamt of capturing an image that would pull together a number of key elements of the region, including paying homage to the history of past colonial times when the indigenous peoples of northeastern Patagonia adopted a horse riding lifestyle. This image says it all. It was taken halfway up a hillside overlooking the plains near a remote lodge located on route to the Perito Moreno Glacier. After 25 minutes on an ever winding and climbing dirt road, we finally came upon this location, and my kidneys were thankful that we arrived. The moodiness of the quickly moving clouds adds to the allure of the region’s ruggedness and remoteness. In the distance, the Andes Mountains rise up to the sky.
The challenge in taking this shot, was the wind. With the storm approaching, the winds were clocking about 50 KM/hr (30MPH) which played havoc with my tripod and camera set-up. With some shielding and weights, I was able to capture this shot, just as one of the horses seemed to take an interest in what I was doing.
I was so happy to be in Patagonia and explore its beauty. If you want to add dome adventure to your life, try a visit to Patagonia, in the southern tip of Argentina.
