Sometimes, extraordinary images can only be found in extraordinary locations like in the case of this Pastel Pink Sunset. On my return trip from Antarctica, we were blessed every night with new and different sunsets many like I had never seen before. Whether it was luck with the weather, or whether, it was the fact that we were in a unique part of the world that just offered up a different combination of natural elements, these sunsets were different. The clouds, sky colors and oceans all contributed to so many memorable views of the setting sun.
Taken at the southern most tip of South America, this land was some of the first land we saw after our northern crossing of the Drake Passage from Antarctica. On this particular evening, we were in our cabin relaxing and I happened to look outside and could not believe my eyes. The sky had very quickly turned a pastel orange pink color, with absolutely no clouds in sight. The layering of the mountains gave this image an almost surreal mystical look. The dark yet iridescent blue ocean water added its own touch of mystery and depth. Wow! I had to work fast, as I know these moments of color during the golden hour do not last long.
I managed to take numerous shots with various settings, and this one was my favorite of the evening. The result is an image of calm, serenity and such a beautiful color that looked as though it was painted by an artist’s brush. With a little luck and timing and being in the correct part of the world, I was able to capture a unique pastel sunset that I will cherish forever. I wonder if anyone else on the ship saw that same scene.
