Touring though India is quite transformational, and one of the many elements contributing to this is the exposure to its beautiful architecture, including this the “Palace of the Winds” (the Hawa Mahal). The City of Jaipur, or The Pink City, is home to numerous architectural masterpieces. The building is made of a pink hued sandstone, and its color does in fact match the bulk of the colour of the other buildings in the city. .Approaching the building from the street, one is left looking up at what appears to be a huge wall, full of windows (or Jharokhas), 953 to be exact. The windows have a lacey look to them, thanks to the intricate latticework. This design allowed the royal women to look out of the windows to see the life in the city, without being seen. I was surprised to find out, that this view from the street is actually the back of the building, as the front of the building looks onto the courtyard. The building is thin and typically only one room thick, and with all the open windows, the wind easily flows through the building.
I wanted to capture an image that would be taken halfway up the building providing a more architecturally correct image. To reach this location was a little harder than expected. Starting at the bottom, I began asking various storefronts on the opposite side of the street from the Palace of the Winds, if I could their balcony to take photos. I kept asking and shooting until I reached the 3 floor, where I was allowed to go out on a specific balcony, giving me a perfect shot. Everyone was unbelievably friendly, kind and helpful.
I was so happy that I was able to get my planned shot as I feel it has a good symmetric look to it. The building is a little dirty, but there is nothing I could do about that. For any travelers to Jaipur, this large canvas print of the Hawa Mahal will bring this beautiful memory right into your home of office.
