An Oregon Cannon Beach Sunset with the famous Haystack Rock in view is not only famous, but also magnificent. On the morning of the day I had planned for walking the beach and taking photos of the Haystack Rock and waves crashing on the shore, the weather delivered one of the windiest days I had ever experienced. So strong were the winds that I was literally being blown over as I walked. I was initially wondering why I had seen most of the trees on the coast leaning over toward the east, I now know the answer why. The winds coming off the Pacific Ocean are so strong they literally bend the trees to grow in a perpetual “lean”. On that day, the high winds were combined with a significant weather storm including heavy rain that just continued pelting down on us. Worried I may not get the shots I had hoped for, we took a break and toured around the lovely town of Cannon Beach.
As the afternoon storm began to subside, I returned to the beach area to see what kind of visual scene was unfolding. The sky began clearing and only a few storm clouds remained in the west over the ocean. As the sun began to set, I felt this might create the image I had hoped for. What a sight. The sun setting with its golden beams shining through the remaining storm clouds, and to the right in the image was the famous Haystack Rock. What a fabulous opportunity and resulting composition. Best yet, if you look closely, there is a lone man walking on the beach at the waters edge.
