The majesty of Niagara Falls Sunrise is world renowned and at first light it is pure magic, although many people never actually see it. Having grown up in the Niagara Region, I came to Niagara Falls often to appreciate its magnificence. I recently returned to the Falls to create some images that I could personally use to remember just how special Niagara Falls truly is.

I decided that I needed to capture an image of the Horseshoe Falls at dawn, just as the sun was rising over the horizon. Arriving at my shooting location at around 5:45am (well before sunrise), I was one of the only people at the Falls' edge. Unfortunately, when I arrived there was construction caution tape around the exact area that I wanted to position myself. I was able to convince the two workers to let me behind the tape, and the kindly obliged. I was lucky to have gotten my ideal spot.

Being almost totally alone with no other sounds, you could hear and feel the power of the water as it dropped 187 feet down into the gorge. As the sky began to lighten pre-dawn, you could begin to see the light hitting the falls at various locations, making the water come alive. The ever-present mist that is formed as a result of the water crashing into the gorge, rises up into the sky and takes on otherworldly shapes and orange hues.

The image captured here was one of my favorite shots of my morning shoot. As the sun just began to peer over the horizon, its warm golden light lit up the mist and turned into a fiery red orange cloud – spectacular! This was the first time I had ever seen this. I felt blessed that I was able to see and capture this beautiful scene.

This image is of the spectacular Horseshoe Falls located on the Canadian side. The Horseshoe Falls is about 57 m (187 ft) high and is about 790 m (2,590 ft) wide. This waterfall is the largest in North America as measured by flow rate. The peak flow over Horseshoe Falls was recorded at 6,400 m3 (230,000 cu ft) per second.
