What can be more beautiful than seeing a Niagara Falls Night scene, with lights brightly shining on Canada’s Horseshoe Falls. While visiting the Falls for a photoshoot, I wanted to capture an image that would have two key elements in the composition. The Horseshoe Falls (on the Canadian side) and one of the main attractions of Niagara Falls, the Fallsview Casino. But the most challenging part of creating this image, is the perspective. Taking it from ground level is typical, and not what I had in my mind. I really wanted to capture an image in which the viewer could see the shape of the Horseshoe Falls and gain a perspective of the scale of the Falls and the Casino and how these two elements work together.
One of the only places that I analyzed that would give me this view would be to go to the top of the famous Skylon Tower. The height was perfect, being 776 feet above the bottom of the Falls and the angle would allow me to capture both these elements in the way I envisioned. However, what could be biggest challenge to overcome would be the fencing that they installed on the outer observation deck to stop people from climbing out. Will I be able to get my lens through the fence somehow to get an unobstructed view of the scene.
When I arrived at the outer observation deck, I ran to the best location and was totally elated to see that the holes on the fencing were wide enough to allow my lens to poke through. Positioning the tripod was the next challenge, but after some maneuvering, I was able to extend two of the legs through the fence and as a result (and luckily) the camera was in the perfect position to start shooting.
I was totally pleased with the resulting final image, that I do believe gives a great elevated view of the Horseshoe Falls lit by the very powerful computer controlled LED light panels, and the beautifully purpled colored Fallsview Casino which is proudly standing on top of the hill overlooking the Falls. Wow!
