My first trip to Lucerne was to visit an old friend of mine, who had moved there from Munich, Germany and I was looking to enjoy some good Lucerne Cityscape Photography. My friend loved the quiet lifestyle, its walkable streets and beautiful scenery all around, and by the time our visit was over, I totally understood what he meant.
We spent the first morning walking around the main downtown core, traversing its many foot bridges across the River Reuss and taking in the occasional stop at coffee, pastry and chocolate shops. However, what I really wanted was to have a view of Lucerne from high up. After some discussions with the locals they pointed to the Town Walls and Towers, which are located up on the hill on the north side of the city. The original construction included 9 towers and the main wall that joins them together.
We were able to climb up four of the towers, and from there we should be treated to a spectacular view of Lucerne and its surrounding landscape. The hike up the hill to get to the towers, then climbing the towers, was not for the feint of heart, especially carrying all kinds of camera gear – but we made it. The image here benefited from a medium cloud covering that was being lit by the golden morning sun. Sun beams were filtering through the clouds and the city had a wonderful golden glow.
You can see the River Reuss in the lower part of the image, and in the distance the Swiss Alps and mounts Pilatus and Rigi. I was absolutely delighted and thankful that we made the hike to the Towers of Lucerne in the early morning, and I was able to capture the image that I was hoping for.
