Lucerne’s Chapel Bridge is synonymous with Lucerne, Switzerland and it serves as the city’s symbol and is its main tourist attraction. Locally known as Kapellbrücke, this covered wooden bridge spans across the River Reuss in downtown Lucerne. This location the Lucerne is tremendously beautiful as it is all very walkable with beautiful old building lining the banks of the river, with cobblestone streets. To get from one side of the river to the other, you walk across numerous bridges. It’s all very romantic.
The covered bridge was originally built in 1365. Having survived a fire in 1993, it is the oldest covered in all of Europe. Part of the bridge complex is the octagonal 34.5 m (113 ft) tall (from ground) Wasserturm, which translates to "water tower," in the sense of 'tower standing in the water.' The tower pre-dated the bridge by about 30 years. Over the centuries, the tower has been used as a prison, torture chamber, and later a municipal archive as well as a local treasury.
What really makes this covered bridge unique, it that is has painted interior triangular frames depicting events from Lucerne’s history. This morning photo was taken from the Rathaussteg bridge (which I have a couple of images in my store showing this bridge).
Lucerne which is surrounded by mountains and is located on Lake Lucerne, is one the prettiest cities I’ve ever visited.
