One of the most famous mosques in the world is the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. It has such history and evokes so much mythical and religious mystery. When you finally see it during the day and night, you will totally understand why it is one of the most interesting and exciting buildings in Istanbul. Since I was a young boy reading stories of the mysteries that made up the exotic city of Istanbul, I knew I had to see it for myself and photograph it in all its glory.
Even though Istanbul has many large, beautiful and famous mosques, the Hagia Sophia is one of the most famous on earth and it has been named as a UNESCO site. What an honor to be in its presence and to spend so much time looking at it and admiring this architectural masterpiece. The structure is an engineering marvel with its huge domes, and an interior that is as unique and stunning.
In order to capture a shot that would give you the viewer, a great idea of what it looks like with all its colors which were brought out by lights, required me to find a location that would be close enough, and yet high enough. After scouting the nearby area, this evening “at dusk” image was taken from a nearby hotel roof restaurant, where the owners were kind enough to let me set-up for my shoot. We paid the owner back by ordering some fabulous red wine which I enjoyed as the shoot went on. The timing of the light needed to be just right as the blue hour was kicking in and lights on the building were coming up beautifully. The rich colors were miraculous to see and experience and they took my breath away. When the shoot was over, we settled back in our chairs and sipped on our wine while indulging in the mysteries of the Hagia Sophia.
I feel blessed to have been able to see, explore and photograph this stunning masterpiece. I know my journeys will take me back to Istanbul again.
