Iceland Sunsets are some of the most unique and special ones on earth due to the geography of the island. This small island located between Greenland and Norway is basically made from volcanic rock. Iceland is the only part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea-level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. The interior consists of a plateau characterized by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. It is these characteristics that makes it so beautiful and unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The sun, lakes and lava rock combine in this image to capture the very essence of Iceland.

After a significant amount of driving around the Golden Circle of Iceland, which is a 300 KM route to three of the most popular stops on the island, we came upon this “edge of the cliff” view of the lakes below and the sun setting on the water. WOW! The timing could not have been better. Shooting directly into the sun does create some technical challenges, but after taking numerous shots at various settings then merging them into a single image, the resulting image tells the whole powerful story of what makes Iceland special.
