The Galapagos Islands offer all visitors a truly unique experience when it comes to searching out and observing animals, birds, fish and reptiles from the prehistoric era, including the Galapagos Giant Tortoise. In 1800’s Darwin used his time in Galapagos to complete his theory of evolution. But to be honest it's really about seeing these untouched species in their native habitat. There are so many different types of birds, iguanas, tortoises and a lot of underwater marine life.
During my recent bucket list trip to the famous Galapagos Islands, located approx. 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, I finally had my dream opportunity to photograph many fish, birds, reptiles and animals who have not changed much from the prehistoric times.
The Giant Galapagos Tortoise is native to only 7 of the 19 Galapagos Islands. These creatures are HUGE! What’s interesting is that they can live up to the age of 177 years old, and they are one of the longest living vertebrates on earth. This image of the entire tortoise body shows the huge shell, legs and head. They move extremely slowly, so I ended up with lots of time to move around and capture a variety of images without worrying they would run off. The tortoises are herbivores that consume a diet of cacti, grasses, leaves, lichens, berries, melons, oranges and milkweed.
They were so cute in their own sort of way. They seemed so incent as the moved their heads in order to keep an eye on you as you can see in this image. But sadly, their numbers are decreasing due to a history of abuse. We were fortunate to see both young (including just hatched) and old tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Station where they are responsible for the protection of and rebirth of the tortoise and other wildlife on the Galapagos Islands. A definite stop when you visit the Galapagos Islands.
