The Galapagos Islands offer all visitors a truly unique experience when it comes to searching out and observing animals, birds, fish and reptiles from the prehistoric era, but if you catch a Galapagos Sunset, it's nirvana. Darwin used his time in Galapagos to complete his theory of evolution. While the real visuals are of the various species of wildlife and marine animals during the day, watching the sun set on the ocean is spectacular. While sunsets happen globally, there is something special about knowing that you are watching a sunset in the Galapagos, those very rare bucket list of islands off the coast of Ecuador, South America.
Because the Galapagos Islands are a series of about 19 islands all grouped together, some islands will never see the sunset because the setting sun is blocked by other islands. So, during a 5-day trip you may only be in a position to actually see the sun set once or twice. We were able to see 2 sunset evening during our trip, so we felt fortunate. The next problem are clouds. If you only get a couple of chances at a sunset and there are clouds, you might not see the sun set at all.
Getting this image was a bit of luck. Our boat anchored for the evening in a perfect position with a small island in between us and the sun that was setting. There were clouds in the sky so I was worried they would block the sunset. However, my luck kicked in when just as the sun started to approach the horizon, the clouds broke and there in its full glory was the golden sun setting - WOW! I could not ask for anything more. The scene was spectacular and made extra special by the silhouette of the small island. Thanks to this lucky photo, this image gives to me a continuous reminder of a very special “Galapagos Sunset”.
