The Galapagos Islands offer all visitors a truly unique experience when it comes to searching out and observing animals, birds, fish and reptiles from the prehistoric era, including the Galapagos Red Crab. Darwin used his time in Galapagos to complete his theory of evolution. But to be honest it's really about seeing these untouched species in their native habitat. There are so many different types of birds, iguanas, tortoises and a lot of underwater marine life.

As I walked along the black lava rock shores of the Island, I was struck by the how many red crabs were scurrying about. There were thousands of them. They move so quickly as they seemed to be walking on the tippy toes. What really attracted my eye to this scene, was the color. The shiny bright red and yellow crabs stood out in contrast from the shiny black lava rocks. I really needed to get an image of this scene. After finding the right location on the rocks and making sure that the water was keeping the rocks wet, I now needed to find a great example of a red crab. I love how their eyes stick out from the top of their head. They are very skittish and as you approach them they go running away to hide under the rocks and into crevices. After finding the one I wanted to photograph, I quietly got closer and positioned my self at the right angle to capture the color and light reflections off the crab and the rocks. This was the resulting image.
