The Galapagos Islands offer all visitors a truly unique experience when it comes to searching out and observing animals, birds, fish and reptiles from the prehistoric era, including the Marine Iguana. In 1800’s Darwin used his time in Galapagos to complete his theory of evolution. But to be honest it's really about seeing these untouched species in their native habitat. There are so many different types of birds, iguanas, tortoises and a lot of underwater marine life.

During my recent bucket list trip to the famous Galapagos Islands, located approx. 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, I finally had my dream opportunity to photograph many fish, birds, reptiles and animals who have not changed much from the prehistoric times. On this day we arrived at Isabela Island, our zodiac boat carried us across the choppy waters and into an alcove where we were able to safely disembark onto the shore.

With my two DSLR’s and associated lenses safely stored in a watertight “marine dry bag”, we exited the boat hip deep into the water, and then began our walk to nearby cove. Whenever one thinks of the Galapagos Islands, one tends to think about the lizard like iguanas. There are numerous species of iguanas on the islands and depending on which Island you visit; you’ll see different species. However, we are here to see the Marine Iguanas, the only lizard on earth that spends time in the water. In fact, the only place that you can see them is in the Galapagos – a rare sight indeed. As you can see, they have a very flat mouth. That’s because they feed only underwater, and they are always scraping their food from the rocks and corals of the undersea world. We did snorkel to see these creatures eating away for hours.

There were so many marine iguanas, at times you couldn’t even see the ground. In order to get at eye level, I laid down on my belly and waited for an iguana to come near me. This Marine Iguana ended striking a great confident pose. I snapped numerous shots and was finally happy with this particular one. I hope you like it.
