The Galapagos Islands offer all visitors a truly unique experience when it comes to searching out and observing animals, birds, fish and reptiles from the prehistoric era, including the Galapagos Brown Pelican which is a unique species of the Pelican family found only in the Galapagos. Darwin used his time in Galapagos to complete his theory of evolution. But to be honest it's really about seeing these untouched species in their native habitat. There are so many different types of birds, iguanas, tortoises and a lot of underwater marine life.

When you are visiting the Galapagos Islands, if you can't be on land, the only other way of animal watching is via a zodiac. From a zodiac you can get close to the shore and the animals, as they carry on their daily activities. However, if the waves are rough (like they were during this morning shoot), taking telephoto photography is very demanding. This image is one of my favorites from the trip.

I saw this pelican on the shore and asked the zodiac driver to get as close as possible, without scaring it off. As we got into position for the shot, the waves were tossing the boat around. I needed to have my camera settings just right, then I needed to time the shot when the boat was in either a high or low position, as that's when the boat would be in a static position if only for a moment. I was ecstatic when I saw that I was able to capture the desired image. The morning light and the bird's pose were perfect, the beautiful brown colors and textures were superb.
