The Galapagos Islands offer all visitors a truly unique experience when it comes to searching out and observing animals, birds, fish and reptiles from the prehistoric era, including the Galapagos Frigate bird. In 1800’s Darwin used his time in Galapagos to complete his theory of evolution. But to be honest it's really about seeing these untouched species in their native habitat. There are so many different types of birds, iguanas, tortoises and a lot of underwater marine life.
The Frigate Bird is a large bird, but what makes it a total standout is that the male has a bright red breast, or throat pouch, that when inflated during breeding season, looks like a big red balloon. This was really something to see. In one of the breeding grounds that we visited, they were everywhere. In this particular image however, I wanted to show the frigate bird in a more beautiful and elegant pose because the features were magnificent. I waited until the bird moved into a position in which it looks like the bird was looking over its shoulder like a fashion model. The lighting was perfect as it highlighted its beautiful back and head feathers.
This was a bird I had never seen before and it was so special to be able to photograph it in its native surroundings in the Galapagos.
