Whistler, BC, is a world-renowned destination, offering everything from top-tier skiing to stunning year-round landscapes. During a business trip with my wife last fall, I couldn’t resist squeezing in some time to capture Whistler’s beauty. The wooden covered bridge over Fitzsimmons Creek stood out as the perfect subject for my portfolio, especially with the area blanketed in the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of autumn.
Rain fell most of the day, soaking the rocks and making the creek bed treacherous. I knew the scene would be worth the risk if the rain stopped in time for sunset. Luckily, as the sun dipped lower, the rain ceased, and the golden hour lit up the autumn leaves. The creek’s banks, covered in fiery foliage, shimmered against the backdrop of the forest and the rustic wooden bridge.
I set up my tripod on the grassy shore before carefully making my way to the creek bed. The sound of the rushing water filled the air as I framed the scene: the flowing creek weaving through mossy rocks, the glowing bridge, and the vivid fall colors bathed in the warm light of sunset. Every step on the slippery rocks felt risky, the threat of slipping into the icy water ever-present.
After taking numerous shots and holding my breath with every adjustment, I climbed back to the safety of the shore. Crossing that bridge four to six times a day during our trip made it even more special. This image now captures not just the beauty of Whistler’s autumn but also the thrill of the moment. It’s a memory I’ll treasure forever, a fleeting fall adventure immortalized in my art.
