In eastern Turkey, the region of Cappadocia is a dreamland onto itself. With its fairy columns, rugged landscape, and deep history of Roman occupation, there are photographic opportunities around every corner. During my visit there, I really wanted to take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. So, one morning (the only one I had left on my itinerary), I went down to the area where the hot air ballooning offices were located, to purchase my ticket.
“Too windy” one of the attendants stated, “we are monitoring the situation”. Oh my, will I not be able to get up in the sky this morning, this is my only shot at it? I was not the only one thinking this. The room was full, and everyone was nervously praying that the winds would die down. After a few coffees and 30 minutes of deep breathing exercises, the announcement came – “we are leaving in 5 minutes, the timing is tight”. While excited, the statement did make me a little nervous.
Watching them blow the balloons up in the take off/staging area was really exciting, as they blasted hot flames into the flaccid balloons, only to have them begin to rise up. We climbed aboard and into the “basket” and soon we were up in the air. This was magical. My camera started taking tons of images. Finally, the sun began to break through the clouds and beams of sunlight hit the balloons and land below. From our view high above the land, white mountains, green pastures and fairy chimneys was all you could see. What a magnificent sight. It was so quiet up in the air, all you could hear was the wind and sound of the flame engine keeping us afloat.
This was a very special experience and one that is highly recommended. I loved every minute of it. I was so happy to be able to capture the scenery below, the balloons in the air and the rising sun.
