The deserts of Morocco have the ideal climate, light and architecture for filming movies, including the very unique Ait Benhaddou ancient clay city. This fortified village along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh in Morocco, is considered a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture. It has been listed a World Heritage Site since 1987. When I was planning the trip to Morocco, I knew that this site was sued for two famous movies - "Gladiator" and "Kingdom of Heaven", and thus I MUST stop to see and photograph it.
My driver had explained that this site was used for many movies and that we would be exploring the famous Atlas Studios not far from this site, to gain a full appreciation for it'd movie stardom. After leaving the Sahara and on route to Marrakesh, we stopped into the Moroccan version of Hollywood - Atlas Studios. It did not disappoint. While there were too many movies to list here, Atlas been the site for so many blockbusters, I was shocked. About 15 of my favorite movies were filmed at Atlas Studios and many of them had scenes that were filmed close by on site at Ait Benhaddou. As a movie fanatic, how exciting is this. When we pulled up to the Ait Benhaddou site, I could visualize the various movies that I had seen that were filmed here.
However, it was a tremendously windy day and once I had arrived at the top of the village I was nearly blown off, a very scary moment indeed. This image taken from across the dry river bed, provides a view of the village that allows you to gain the full appreciation for the building, hill and lower river bed with thick forests at the base.
If you are a fan of "Gladiator", "Kingdom of Heaven", "Alexander", "Jewel of the Nile", and many others, then this image will take you right there to the site of these movies.
