When I visited Lisbon Portugal, there was one particular image I needed to capture - the famous Belem Tower in the morning light. Eagerly anticipating the early morning departure, I packed my gear the night before and tried to get a good sleep. I awoke, and with excitement in my step I grabbed my gear and headed out from the hotel to the street to catch my Uber ride. The morning streets of Lisbon were very quiet at 5am, the sun had not risen yet and most people were still sleeping.
The ride along was wonderful, as I was exposed to a whole new area of Lisbon. The Belem district is steeped in history and this Tower represented the gateway to Lisbon as early as the 16th century. The tower was constructed to act as a military fortification located at the mouth of the Tagus River as it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
I was hoping to capture the beige-white limestone structure illuminated by the golden rising sun. I was not disappointed. The low tide presented me with a unique visual of moving water on the Tagus River combined with the protected shallow tidal pool which acted a mirror as it reflected the tower in its smooth water. The golden glow on the tower was beautifully matched by the golden horizon in the distance.
I feel this image pays proper homage to the Belem Tower which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. I love the detail in this image.
